The Hand of Timothy Leary

by Justin Pomeroy

Conscious Choice, March 1996

Dr. Timothy Leary's hand in 1980 represents a striking example of the "Air" hand of intellectual search combined with some of the "Fire" hand qualities of the creative/sensual need to express. The sturdy, rectangular palm with long, wide-spread fingers attest to his need to penetrate deeply into the nature of truth and reality. This hand type is often found in teachers and writers. I call this particular "Air" hand "The Communicator" (there are five recognized "Air" hand types).

The lines on Dr. Leary's hand are numerous, deep, expressive, and gracefully interconnected showing that he is alert, receptive, quickly stimulated and easily impressed. Yet, the straight-as-an-arrow head line (1) shows that he is also grounded by an impressively stable mind. This straight, strong, deeply-cut head line could be the reason why Dr. Leary could endure thousands of psychedelic experiments on himself without any discernable fracturing of his psyche. Indeed, viewing his hand as a whole, keeping in mind the open, expressive fingers, the strong, intelligent thumb, and his straight head line, what emerges is a scientific/philosophic hand par excellence.

We see a formidable open mind with tolerance of thought, breath of thinking, and prodigious energy. The fork at the end of the head line (2) traditionally indicates writing talent.

Upon studying this hand, I have come to the conclusion that Dr. Timothy Leary is a sort of "post-modern Socrates"--an honest, open-minded explorer/seeker/teacher of truth. However, there is also much of the iconoclast and bohemian--a "Dionysian" element.

The deeply-cut "via lascivia" line (3) (also called the "escape line") in the lower mount of Luna shows his tendency for self-indulgence.

In love, Dr. Leary is very idealistic, demanding and possessive as shown by his low-lying "Jupiterian" heart line (4).

The clearly marked ring of Venus (5) and the thick, fleshy base of the palm underscore his very passionate and sensual love style. Yet there are signs of many disappointments in love due to unrealistic expectations and demands which made him distrust his feelings and become extremely lonely at times.

The strong fate line (6) shows a man of integrity whose morals and values were internalized at an early age, probably by religious training. The presence of this line rising so high in the palm of an "Air" hand person shows great adaptability and integrative ability.

The widely swinging line of life (7) that reaches to the vertical center of his palm shows that Dr. Leary possesses great "channel capacity"--the ability to rapidly synthesize large amounts of information input.

His equally strong Apollo/Venus line (8) below the ring finger foretells his inner need for recognition or fame. The beautiful, spatulate-topped finger tips show an active mind always wanting to try things in a new way. The wider spacing between the little finger and the ring finger may indicate that he had a possible "mother-fixation" in early life but it's also usually indicative of an extremely indefatigable intellect.

Sadly, Dr. Leary recently succumbed to prostate cancer. To the end, his pioneering, creative mind continued to inspire. He left us a legacy on the web at http://www.leary.com/
